Craving Chicken Cordon Bleu

I have been craving cordon bleu for a while now and normally I would just go buy some from the store and call it good, or google some recipes and follow them exactly. But my hubby doesn't really enjoy when I just buy frozen dinners and he always encourages me to make it up as I go. So I took his advise and instead of looking up a recipe I came up with my own creation.
Most of the time when I come up with my own creation it really doesn't turn out but we eat it and think of ways to make it better. This time it turned out ok which is better that normal. So this is what I did. I took chicken and just put the ham and swiss cheese on it then folded it over and breaded it with wheat cracker crumbs. I baked it for about 45 minutes at 350. It turned out good but at dinner we talked about what could make it better and this is what we came up with. Maybe using a stronger cheese and bacon instead of ham (to add more flavor). We also talked about getting the cheese and ham flavor through the whole chicken by cutting the chicken and almost making a sandwich out of it. Well if there are any pro cordon bleu makers out there (I know there are) maybe you have some tips and suggestions?

  1. I haven't made this for a while, but I have a tried and true recipe. You have to pound out the chicken breasts flat and then put a piece of deli ham on it an a piece of swiss cheese on that. Fold it all over and secure with toothpicks. I would maybe suggest rolling it in Panko crumbs if you want it crunchier. There's a simple sauce made with cream of chicken soup or whatever you like. Looks tasty--I like the idea that you used whole wheat crumbs.
